Louis was born in Gonzales, Texas and grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He married Mathilde Cahn ("Tillie") on April 16 1885 in Woodville, Mississippi. After a few years, Louis and Tillie moved to nearby Baton Rouge, Louisiana and spent a decade there before moving on to St. Louis, Missouri and finally to Chicago, Illinois. His profession was as a Bookkeeper.

Louis and Tillie's only surviving son (who was born Lazar Cahn on Feb 8 1889 in Woodville, Wilkinson County, Mississippi,) forsook his family and assumed a new identity as a young adult, changing both his name and his place and date of birth. He is listed below as Earle Vance Victor Peter Raubeson and his story (2 versions) can be read on his memorial page by following his link. His brother Edgar's gravestone reads "Youngest Son", but because of an error in the birthdate shown for Lazar on his memorial for his assumed identity, as Earle, the birth order of the children is skewed below, showing "Earle" as the younger son rather than Edgar.
