Lazar, born Feb 8 1889, was the second of five children born to Louis Cahn and Mathilda Schlesinger. He and his older sister Reine, and their younger brother Edgar, who died at the age of 3, were all born in Woodville, Mississippi. His two younger sisters, Edna and Regina, were born in Louisiana.

By 1900, the family had moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he attended school and by 1910 to Chicago, Illinois.

By 1917, Lazar had assumed a new identity as Earle Raubeson and had married Marie Cameron. They made their home in Massachusetts, where they resided until Marie's death in 1940. He then moved to New Haven, Connecticut where some of his adult children resided, and he lived there until his death.

There are several stories as to why Lazar took on his new identity. He not only changed his name, but also his year and place of birth, claiming Feb 8 1891 as his birthdate and Auxier, Kentucky as his birthplace on future records. On his death certificate, his son provides his correct birthdate of Feb 8, 1889 but states his birthplace as Lexington , KY.

Lazar remains a bit of a mystery. Under his new identity he used a number of variations of his new name, including:
Earle Peter Raubeson in 1917 when he married (listing his father's last name as Raubeson rather than Cahn);
Earle Vance Victor Peter Raubeson on his WWI Draft Registration;
EV Peter Raubeson for the 1920 Census;
Earle P Raubeson for the 1930 Census;
Earle Vincent Raubeson on his WWII Draft Registration;
On his death certificate, he's Earle Peter Raubeson, that information provided by his son Charles.

He served in the Army before WWI, and was called up as a reservist and assigned to the arsenal at Waterton. He was discharged from the Army in Boston. He and Marie raised eight children, seven sons and one daughter.
Marie died in 1940, believed to be in the Boston , MA area, but her death records and burial info remain elusive. Lazar died in 1961, and his remains were cremated at Evergreen Crematory in New Haven, CT and his ashes returned to Keenan Funeral Home for the family.
