In 1900 he, his parents, his eleven siblings, and a roomer, 50-year-old Herman Thalla, lived in a house they were renting at 735 North Fifth Street in Grand Forks, ND. His father and James worked as carpenters, Eliza as a teacher, John as a shipping clerk, and Herman as a laborer.

In 1910 he and his parents and six of his siblings lived in a house they owned, mortgage free, at 914 Walnut Street in Grand Forks. His father worked as a carpenter and Barbara as a clerk in a jewelry store.

In 1930 he and his wife and their six children lived in a house they owned at 1222 Winchester Avenue in Glendale, CA. Their home was valued at $6500, and they did not have a radio. He worked as a real estate broker.

In 1940 he, Ernestine, their six youngest children, and two lodgers lived in a house they owned at 597 Laurel Avenue in Fontana, CA. Their home was valued at $2000. He worked as a real estate broker with his own business, and Donald as an electrician's helper.
