In 1900 she, her parents, eleven siblings, and a roomer, 50-year-old Herman Thalla, lived in a house they were renting at 735 North Fifth Street in Grand Forks, ND. Her father and brother James worked as carpenters, her sister Eliza as a teacher, and her brother John as a shipping clerk.

In 1910 she and her parents and six of her siblings lived in a house they owned, mortgage free, at 914 Walnut Street in Grand Forks. Her father worked as a carpenter and Barbara as a clerk in a jewelry store.

In 1920 she and her husband and their daughter lived in an apartment they were renting at 107 1/2 Vernon Avenue (now Reeves Drive) in Grand Forks, ND. Seal worked as a salesman for a packing company.
