Second son of Richard Mather and Catherine Holt-Mather, Nathaniel was born at Much Woolton, near Liverpool. In 1635 his father took him to New England. He graduated from Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1647. Nathaniel finished his studies in England, probably returning with his brother Samuel in 1650. He completed 47 years of ministry in England, Holland and Ireland.
