Civil War: Company B, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers

William Berry was born at Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland, in 1833. During the Civil War he enlisted as private of Captain George W. Ousley’s Company B, 1st Battalion of Mountaineers, California Volunteers, at Fort Humboldt, California, June 2, 1863. Private Berry was mustered-out with his company at Camp Curtis, Arcata, Humboldt County, May 13, 1865. William died at Eureka, Humboldt County June 13, 1879. Fourteen years after his death, Eureka's Colonel Whipple Post, No. 49, Grand Army of the Republic, ordered a veteran's headstone for his grave in July 1893. This headstone was delivered to Eureka and awaiting installment in late December 1893 (The Humboldt Times [Eureka, CA], 22 December 22, 1893, 4:3).

WILL HAVE MARBLE HEADSTONES.
As soon as the weather becomes settled Col. Whipple Post, No. 49, G.A.R., will place the headstones received from the government for the graves of their fallen comrades in position. The headstones are of white marble, three feet six inches high, 4 inches thick and 10 inches wide. ln the center is a sunken shield on which, in raised letters, though flush with the face of the stone, are the name and service of the deceased. Those for whom headstones have been provided are: Members of the 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers — Augustus Fischer (sic, Fisher), Co. B; Jas. Burrows, Co. B; W. A. Shaw, Co.
