According to the book, “The Argyle Patent and It’s Early Settlers” by James McNaughton, Archibald was the son of James and Ann Campbell Gillis of Argyle. He was born in Kakiate, Orange County, New York around 1754. He came to Charlotte (later Washington) County with his father in 1765. Archibald served in the Charlotte County Militia during the Revolutionary War. He married Catherine McNeil, the daughter of Archibald and Catharine McArthur McNeil. They had seven children and were members of the Associated Reform Presbyterian Church of Argyle, where Archibald was an elder in 1802. The family may have lived on Lot # 108.
