He was born May 23, 1931, in Albert Lea, Minn., to Ben and Agnes (Loken) Shurson, and grew up in New Richland, Minn. In 1951, Virgil joined the Army and served in Korea during the war. He was honorably discharged as a SFC from Fort Bliss, Texas. Virgil was a member of the Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Post 51 of West Salem. On Nov. 26, 1955, he married Patricia Peters in La Crosse. Virgil worked for Standard Lumber Company and they transferred him to Willmar, Starbuck, Benson, Mankato, and Winona, Minn. In 1975, he joined Lesters Builders and moved to West Salem. During his employment with Lesters, Virgil received eight sales awards. After retiring from Lesters in 1991, he started Shurson Distributing and even after selling the company, Virgil still kept busy driving his Chevrolet pick-up to pick up and deliver loads of material.
Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Patricia; five children, Judi (Dave) Smith of Lakeville, Minn., Jolene Dovenberg (fiance, Mark Baus), Jim Shurson, and Jenelle (Rick) Oldenburg, all of West Salem, and Jennifer (Jay) Johnson of Mindoro, Wis. He was a special grandfather to Derek, Andrew, Allison, Mason, Austin, Ethan, Amber, Dustin, Courtney, and Jenna. Other survivors include his brothers and sisters, Buddy (Phyllis) Shurson and Marjorie (Leo) Christenson, both of New Richland, Minn., Harold (Shirley) Shurson of Clear Lake, Iowa, his twin sister (because one could never be that good looking) Virginia (Vince) Peterson of New Richland, Minn., and Joan Mc Guire of Eden Prairie, Minn.; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lorayne Shurson of New Richland, Minn., Donna (Norman) Janzen of Cashton, Wis., Donald (Florence) Peters of Rockland, Wis., Gary (Marlene) Peters and David (Joan) Peters, both of Cashton; and many nieces, nephews, and extended relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Merle and Charles; and a sister, Beatrice.
