James D. McLeod was born in Laurens County, Georgia, the second of seven children. He was educated in the Jeff Daivs County School system through the seventh grade, he left school to contribute significantly to the support of his family. He married the former Thelma Simmons, and they became the parents of four sons-Kennon, Jimmy, Kennith, and Farrell. He volunteered for the United States Army during World War II, he served from 24 December 1944 to 8 May, 1945 in Belgium, France, Holland, and Germany and he received a citation for the Bronze Star Medal. He was one of only seven men out of 185 soldiers in his battalion to survive the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. Sgt. McLeod served with Company M, 290th Regiment of the 75th Infantry Division. McLeod grew up on a farm, and was a productive farmer himself, and from 1952-1975 he was an active businessman as owner and operator of Hazlehurst Feed and Seed.
