The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:

VARLEY, WILLIAM. Fusilier. No 45796. 9th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. Born Huddersfield. Son of John and Hannah Varley, 55 Kings Mill Lane, Huddersfield. Husband of Elizabeth Varley, 33 George Street, Milnsbridge. Employed as a pattern weaver by Messrs Walter Sykes Limited, Zetland Mills, Huddersfield. Attended Milton Church Sunday School and formerly attended the P.S.A. there. Enlisted 6.7.1916. Embarked for France in December, 1916. Wounded 13.4.1918. Died of wounds at No 46 Stationary Hospital on 17.4.1918, aged 36 years.

Buried ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY. Grave location:- Plot 29, Row F, Grave 5a.
ROH:- Milnsbridge War Memorial; memorial in Almondbury Cemetery; commemorated in Salendine Nook Baptist Chapel yard, F189.
