Vitales Salstrand was born in Sweden and came to America as a young boy with his family. They settled in Shenandoah, Iowa where he grew up, before moving on to Clayton, Polk county, Wisconsin, where he farmed. Vitales married Hulda Maria Olson of Clear Lake, Wisconsin, and they had 2 daughters. After Hulda's death, he married Anna Charlotta Nygren and had another daughter. Vitales was only 52 when he died in 1929

Vitales became a naturalized U.S. Citizen on 7 May 1902 in Slayton, Murray county, Minnesota, along with his brother Albert.
