Character Actor. He was born in Washington (District of Columbia) and died in Los Angeles. He began his career on stage, but soon he moved to cinema, where he debuted in silent films in 1917, ultimately appearing in over 200 films. He is best remembered for films such as "A Man to Remember" (1938), "Dodge City" (1939), "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940), "Foreign Correspondent" (1940), "To Be or Not To Be" (1942), "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1945), "3 Godfathers" (1948), "Here Comes the Groom" (1951) and "Friendly Persuasion" (1956). He was cremated and his ashes buried in a columbarium of Forest Lawn, but they were later removed by his family.
