Ella was the daughter of Amanda Keziah (nee Casad) and the Rev. Collin Dew James. On December 25, 1877 in Evanston, Illinois, she married Edwin John Bickell. Their children were Edith E. and Ralph Thomas. Edwin was a Methodist minister. The family moved from Illinois to Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana before settling in Alabama. Edwin passed away in Alabama. Afterward, Ella and the children lived for a time in Montana. Ella second married Temple Ray Noel.
