Isaiah Allen served in two units during the Civil War. Mr. Allen was a resident of Lincoln, Maine, when he enlisted on September 4, 1861. He had blue eyes, light hair and a light complexion and stood 5'6" tall. Private Allen served in Co. E and Co. F, 7th Maine Infantry, and was promoted to full wagoner. He was mustered out of that unit and transferred into Co. F., 1st Maine Veteran Infantry on December 21, 1863, at Brandy Station, Virginia. He was mustered out on June 28, 1865.
The 7th Maine Infantry was organized at Augusta, Maine, and was mustered in on August 21, 1861, and mustered out on August 21, 1864, at Charleston, Virginia. The veterans and recruits were transferred to the 1st Maine Veteran Infantry.
The 1st Maine Veteran Infantry was organized on August 21, 1864, by consolidating the 5th, 6th, and 7th Maine Infantries. The regiment was mustered out on June 28, 1865.
Isaiah Allen was born on May 23, 1835, in Birmingham, England, the son of Aaron and Sarah (Nelson) Allen. Isaiah married Dianna Balcom on May 26, 1861, and they lived in Maine, Canada, and Michigan following the Civil War. He moved to the village of Kalkaska, Michigan, in the late 1890s. In 1900, he was widowed and a boarder in the Alphia and Emeline Wheeler household.
Isaiah Allen, with the help of attorney James Greacen of Kalkaska, applied for an invalid pension in the late 1890s.
Two of Isaiah's children, Wallace and William A., lived in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County.
Wallace Allen was born in 1872 in Canada. He married Grace Johnston on August 15, 1901, in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County. Grace was born about 1881 at Breedsville, Michigan, the daughter of James and Carrie (Spade) Johnston. Children born to Wallace and Grace were: Clare, born in 1903; Irma, born in 1905; Clayton J., born in 1907; and Jennie, born in 1916. Wallace and Grace divorced, and in 1920 Wallace lived in Grand Traverse County, Michigan.
William Alexander Allen was born about 1884 in Canada. He married Grace Allen on May 12, 1920, at Kalkaska. This was the first marriage for William. William and Grace had two children; Warren, born in 1921, and Dorothy, born in 1924. In 1930, the William Allen family lived in Rapid River Township.
Civil War veteran Isaiah Allen died on February 26, 1919, in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County. He is buried in the Westwood Cemetery in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County, Michigan. A Civil War military gravestone was ordered in the fall of 2011 with plans to place it on the grave in the spring of 2012.
