He was a retired rural mail carrier from New England and Washington, U.S. Post offices, a graduate of Parkersburg High School, and a United States Army veteran of World War II and again during the Korean War. He worked building many homes in the area as a carpenter, but his first love was farming. Family, friends, gardening, hunting, fishing, and the last few years watching the Gaither Homecoming Series have filled his life.
He is survived by one sister, Celia Stephens of Parkersburg and Florida; one brother, George and wife, Rita of Rock Hill, S.C.; several nieces and nephews; eleven great-nieces and nephews; six great-great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-great-niece. He is also survived, in addition to many friends and neighbors, by Janet Spencer, his housekeeper and caregiver of fifteen years, and his beloved pet cow of twenty-five years Sadface.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Reeder and infant, Imogene and brothers, Gordon, John Albert, and Walter Jr. "Bud".
Services will be Wednesday 11 a.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Robert Watkins officiating. Burial will be at Lubeck Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
