Alexander’s enlistment papers and marriage record has place of birth as London, although the 1841 English census category “where born” records Middlesex County.

The 1841 English census, his father, Robert, and mother, Elizabeth, along with older siblings, Henry, Claude, and Alexander lived in Tottenham, St. Pancras, Middlesex County. St. Pancras was on the outskirts of London in 1841. In 1855, it was included as an area of responsibility for the Metropolitan Board of Works, London. In 1850, the family had moved to Norwalk, CT.
