US Congressman, New Hampshire Governor. Born in Sutton, New Hampshire, as a youth he studied under private tutors and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1806. He was elected to represnent Hew hampshire in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1821 to 1825. He was then elected Governor of New Hampshire in 1830 but resigned February 8, 1831 to accept an appointment by President Andrew Jackson to be a United States District Court Judge. He served in that capacity until his death in Concord, New Hampshire.
