Olaf spelled his name "Johanson" because that is how it appeared on all of his school records. The Johansen spelling comes from his paternal grandmother, whose maiden name was used by Olaf's father after he immigrated to the US from Norway. There were so may Gustav Jonassons where he was living that he never got his mail from home. So he took his Swedish mother's maiden name. When Olaf went to school, the teachers knew his parents were Norwegian and they used the Norwegian spelling. I'm not sure who decided to use the "Johansen" spelling on the marker, but it is probably due to the fact that Olaf's parents and a sister are buried in adjacent plots.
