He was born in Kansas City, Missouri, February 23, 1912.

He had one older brother who was still born and is buried at Damascus Cemetery in Franklin County Mississippi. His parents divorced when he was about 12 and his mother remarried, Robert F. Lee, a widower, who had two young sons that she raised as her own and Richard accepted as his own brothers. They were Roy Lee and Malcolm Lee, Roy Lee was a pilot in the Army and was killed in a plane crash in the early 1940's and Malcolm died of a heart attack at age 50.

Richard worked in Memphis until his retirement to Heber Springs in 1974. He loved Heber and was very happy here.
