Musician, Songwriter. He was known as The Poet", and is considered by many to be one of the greatest performers of Italian music. He wrote songs for artists such as Mia Martini "Minuetto and "La nevicata", Ornella Vanoni "La musica è finita" and "Una ragione di più", Peppino Di Capri "Un grande amore e niente più", which won at Sanremo Festival in 1973, Bruno Martino "E la chiamano estate" and Edoardo Vianello "Semo gente de borgata". He wrote three memorable songs for Caterina Caselli, "Le ali della gioventù", "Che strano amore" and "Un po' di te" as well as the lyrics of song "Un'estate fa", the Italian version of "Une belle histoire" of the French singer Michel Fugain. In 1974, he wrote for Mina a entire album, "Amanti di valore", regarded by critics as a masterpiece. He sang music hits such as "Tutto il resto è noia", "Fijo mio", "Tac, La mia libertà " and "Io nun piango". Califano attended the first time in the Sanremo Festival in 1988 with song "Io per le strade di quartiere" co-written with Toto Cutugno. He returned at Sanremo in 1994 with the song "Napoli" and in 2005 with "Non escludo il ritorno", written together with Tiromancino. Califano appeared as an actor in several films including "Sciarada alla francese" (1963), "Gardenia, il giustiziere della mala" (1979) , "Due strani Papà" (1983), "Viola bacia tutti " (1998) and "Questa notte è ancora nostra" (2008). He was also author of popular books such as "Diario di un uomo da strada", "Sesso e sentimento e Calisutra" and "Storie di vita e casi dell'amore raccontati dal maestro". In 2008, he wrote his autobiography titled "Senza Manette". He died because of a long illness at his home in Acilia near Rome.
