Russell Oliver Thompson

Russell Oliver Thompson, 85, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. He was born Sept. 18, 1919, in Jersey County, one of 11 children of Logan and Viola (Bowers) Thompson. He married the former Hazel Schaaf on Nov. 6, 1943, in Jerseyville. She survives. A resident of Kane for many years, he was employed at the Kane Croft Farm for 21 years until the farm was sold and then began working as a mechanic and driver for Krause and Son Implement Co. in Jerseyville, retiring in 1982, after dedicating 15 years to the business. He was a member of the Jerseyville Moose Lodge 695 and enjoyed their many activities and meals that he and his wife were able to take part in and was especially proud of his yard and garden.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Russell Edward Thompson of Wood River and Raymond and Doris Thompson of Fieldon; a daughter and son-in-law, Verna Kay and Perry Ontis of Fieldon; a stepdaughter, Shirley Jean Johnson of Roxana; four grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 19 stepgreat-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-great- grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Brown of California and Cecile Russell of Godfrey; and two brothers, Herman "Pete" Thompson of Tacoma, Wash., and Donald Thompson of Granite City.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a stepdaughter, Edna Mae Farris; three stepgrandchildren, Carl Russell Johnson, Billy Joe Farris and Michael Farris; a sister, Hazel Mae Thompson; and five brothers, Raymond, James, Logan Jr., Charles William and Truman Thompson. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where the Rev. Jon Lobos will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be at Kane Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Jerseyville Moose Lodge 695.
