Maria Jonsdotter Paradise was born February 6, 1857, in Abekas district, Malmo, Sweden; she was the daughter of Jon Trylsson Paradise and Elsa Lena Jacobsdotter Paradise. (Maria appears in the family records as both Maria Jonsdotter and Maria Paradise. Jonsdotter is neither a middle name nor a surname, but rather a patronymic. Paradise appears to be a farm name, which would have been used sim-ilarly to a surname; the name is not associated with generations prior to Maria's father.)

She married Pehr Christianson on February 7, 1879, at Nebbelof Church, Skivara, Sweden. Within a few years at most, they emigrated to Jersey City, Hudson Co, NJ; they had two children there before moving on to Spruce Hill, Douglas Co, MN, where Maria gave birth to eight more children.

Maria died March 30, 1924, having been pre-ceded by two infant children. She was survived by husband Pehr; son Frans; daughters Emma Peterson, Anna Hanson, Hulda Johnson, Henri-etta Thomas, Jennie Helland, Clara Ahlberg, and Amanda Nelson; grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
