After Hallie graduated from the University of Illinois in 1938, she married Joseph Henri Amiel. During their years together, they traveled overseas, raising their children in Vienna, Austria, Rio de Janeiro,Brazil, Madrid, Spain and Bogota, Columbia. As the wife to a director of Catholic Charities, she embraced local cultures and made life a fun and enlightening adventure for her children. She loved to travel and did so extensively in Europe and South America but never forgot her Midwestern roots.
