Spc. Kevin Cardoza, 19, of Mercedes, Texas died May 4, in Maiwand, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when their vehicle was attacked by an enemy improvised explosive device. The soldiers were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36thInfantry, 1stBrigade Combat Team, 1stArmored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.
Hometown hero Army Specialist Kevin Cardoza, 19, was killed in action on May 4, 2013 in Maiwand, Afghanistan of injuries sustained when his vehicle was attacked by an enemy improvised explosive device. A 2011 graduate of Edcouch-Elsa High School, Kevin will forever be remembered by the courage he showed to fight for his country and in his belief that freedom was for all. He is survived by his daughters: Delilah Nevaeh Cardoza and Melanie Renee Cardoza; parents: Ramiro Cardoza, Sr. and Maria Cardoza; brothers: Ramiro Cardoza, Jr. (Jessica Rodriguez) and Michael Cardoza; and sister: Leslie Lizette Cardoza. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother Eduarda Cardoza and his maternal grandparents Maria Belen and Hector De La Cruz. He is also survived by his nephews, Ramiro Cardoza III and Ryan James Cardoza. Numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive him. Kevin is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather (+) Joel Cardoza, Sr. Private visitation for family only will be Monday, May 13, 2013. Public visitation will be on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Trinity Worship Center, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Trinity Worship Center from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Cardoza Funeral Home in Edcouch, Texas. Kevin is and will forever be an example to all his family, friends, and community.
