Son and heir to Sir Matthew Stawell and Eleanor, daughter and co-heiress to Sir Richard Merton.

Husband of Joan Berkeley, daughter of Sir John Berkeley and Elizabeth Betteshorne. They had no known issue.

Secondly, husband of Joan Frampton, daughter of Walter Frampton of Buckland Ripers, Dorset. They married before 1403 and had one son and two daughters.

Thirdly, husband of Margaret Burton, the daughter of Henry Burton.

In 1423, Sir Thomas was named an executoir in the will of a Robert Hylle of Spaxton.

Sir Thomas was buried in the south transept at Glastonbury Abbey. Margaret survived him.
