Ed served in the Army, in W.W. II with the 8th Armored Division, 18th Tank Battalion in the European Theatre from March 24, 1943 to November 13, 1945, traveling through England, France, Holland, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. He was a long time employee of Davis Fire Brick Co. and later worked as an electrician and a member of I.B.E.W. He was past commander and member of Kent Metzler, Post 261 American Legion. He faithfully served as a Disabled American Veteran’s Honor Guard. Ed also was a member of the Portland Masonic Lodge and member of the Shriner’s Club.
Ed spent much of his time as a farmer/gardener and people traveling Rt. 93 always enjoyed his beautiful garden, from which he always shared the bounty.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Norma (Thomas) Smith; one brother, Lowell Smith; and infant grandson, Ian James Seymour.
He is survived by his son, Dana (Sheila) Smith; three daughters, Peggy (Jesse) Taylor, Cathie (Dennis) McFann, Angie (Tracy) Seymour; five grandchildren, Sean (Carla) Taylor, Mia (Joe) Alcox, Chad (Tasha) Smith, Missy (Kendall) Miller, Matt McFann;and six great grandchildren, Jessica Taylor, Faith and Austin Miller, Addie and Maryn Smith, and Brailon McFann.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2009 at the Kuhner-Lewis Funeral Home. Burial to follow in C.M. Cemetery with military graveside services from the Jackson Disabled American Veterans Post #45. Friends may call Thursday, April 9, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Disabled American Veterans Honor Guard, Post #45, 170 Pearl St. Jackson, Ohio 45640.
