Born in Staragd, Pomm, Germany.
In his homeland he took up the profession of a pharmacist. In 1860 he emigrated to America and came to St Louis where he conducted a drugstore for a time. He then enlisted in the Union army as Regimental Steward and after being honorably discharged from that service went to Trenton, IL., and conducted a drug store there for several years. In 1868 he moved to Highland and was continuously in the drug business for almost 40 years. He sold out and retired from business about 1904.
