Novelist, Author. Regarded by many as the Master of the Contemporary Horror Literature. He is best remembered for his best seller The Rats (1974), considered a horror classic. Born in London into a family of humble origins. He attended the Catholic school of Our Lady of the Assumption where at age eleven he won a scholarship for the St Aloysius College in London. He attended the Hornsey College of Arts and Crafts at Middlesex University where he studied graphic design and photography. After his studies, he found work in the as typographer at an advertising agency. In a very short period of time, he became Art Director and Head of the agency; thus, starting his career as a full-time writer. In 1974, at age twenty-eight, he wrote his first novel The Rats, which also became a graphic novel with the title The City (1994). The following year, he had another great literary success with The Fog, two works in the disaster genre. Herbert explored recurrent themes in his subsequent works such as ghosts, the paranormal as well as Nazism and reincarnation. During his career as a writer which lasted more than three decades, he wrote over twenty-seven novels that are considered to be masterpieces of the horror genre including notably The Spear (1978), Lair (1979), Moon (1985), Haunted (1988), 48 (1996) and The Secret of Crickley Hall(2006). Many of his works were adapted for film and British television. In 2010, he was honored with the World Horror Convention Grand Master Award. In the same year, Herbert was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Two years later, he wrote Ash, his last novel. He passed away at his home in the south of England at the age of sixty-nine.
