On May 18, 2013, the world lost a wonderful man. Surrounded by family, Tom Lovell, known to most as Tidy Tom, lost his 2-1/2 year battle with a brain tumor. Born February 21, 1946, the son of Joseph and Madlyn (Mossar) Lovell, Tom graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1964. He joined the Electrical Apprentice Program of Washtenaw County following in his father's footsteps as an electrician. After working as an electrician and with the onset of the Vietnam War, Tom decided to enlist in the Navy. After training with the Navy , he served his country in Vietnam with the NAVCAT 13 United States Seabees.
Upon his return to Ann Arbor and his return to college, Tom started Tidy Tom Janitorial Supplies & Maintenance, a company that he nurtured for 40 years. He never asked his employees to do any job that he wouldn't do. Tom was a proud member, and past president, of Kiwanis. He was also a member of Local IBEW252, and was elected to the Board of Directors of ISSA (International Sanitary Supply Association).
Tom loved to travel with his family and friends. An avid outdoorsmen, some of his favorite trips included elk hunting in Wyoming and fishing in Canada with his friend Dave, the Bahamas with Mark and Judy, and yearly jaunts to Florida with his good friend, Jim Stein. He was never happier than when he was with his family and friends. His favorite saying was "friends and family are what is most important." Other hobbies included kayaking, stock car racing, and playing hockey with the Ann Arbor Masters.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Marsana Rayment Lovell, son Brandon Lovell of Ann Arbor, daughter Heather Maddox, grandchildren Riley and Logan Maddox of Shelton, Washington, sisters Pat (Peter) Schmid, Judi (Ken) Collica and Betsy (Bill) Blackmon, sisters-in law Marcia Schmid and Sandy Schulz, and many nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jim Lovell.
Many of Tom's close friends stepped up to help during Tom's illness, and we would like to thank all of them, especially ‘St.' Don, Jim, Ron, Doug, Jim and caregivers, Heidi and Melissa.
Tom had a personality that walked in the room 5 minutes before he did. His incredible sense of humor and generosity will long be remembered.
