M. Jane (1. William McClain 2. John McGraw), Elizabeth (Tom Bailey), Hester Ann (Lewis Lay), Peter (Susan Turner) and William. Thomas and Mary were married approximately 25 years before her death. We can only estimate her death as occurring after the 1850 census and before his second marriage. Mary's burial location is unknown.
Thomas married Hester Ann Monday at the home of her parents, Samuel and Delilah Rogers Monday, in Claiborne County on May 22, 1859. They had one son, James Fletcher Pierce. James married Margaret Louise Monday, daughter of William and Rebecca Norvell Monday.
We know that Thomas was a justice of the peace in Campbell County pursuant to the marriage record of James and Priscilla Nelson Pierce posted on this memorial.
Regarding his military career, when Thomas was 19 he volunteered as a private on June 26, 1836 to fight during the Tennessee Cherokee War in Company S, 2 Mounted Tennessee Militia. Their battle lasted 8 days. See the attachment to this memorial.
After Tennessee declared its secession from the United States, Thomas enlisted as a corporal in 1 Reg't East Tenn. Inf., Co. B. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant in January 1862 and then on March 15, 1862 he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant.
Thomas had fought in two battles at Murfreesboro. Not long after the second (also referred to as the battle at Stones River), on January 17, 1863, Thomas died of disease, leaving Hester a widow with their 3 year old son. Hester did not remarry. She applied for and received a pension which was last paid, due to death, on November 4, 1895 Her burial location is unknown.
