Two FBI special agents were killed Friday during a training exercise off the coast of Virginia Beach, Virginia, the bureau said in a statement released Sunday.
"Special Agent Christopher Lorek and Special Agent Stephen Shaw were assigned to the FBI's Critical Incident Response Group. The cause of the incident is under review."
An official who asked not to be identified told CNN that the two agents were killed in a hostage rescue training exercise.
Agent Shaw, 40, joined the FBI in 2005 and is survived by his wife; a daughter, age 3; and a son, age 1
He was an inspiration and a role model to everyone he encountered - his work ethic, diligence and determination were unparalleled. He served his country for his entire adult life throughout many government agencies, Border Patrol, Diplomatic Security, Customs, and finally to his dream as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
