JOHANNESEN, Thyra "Johnson" - 94, Abercrombie, Pictou Co., passed away peacefully at home on April 16, 2000. Born in Oddense, Denmark, she was a daughter of the late Hans Peter and Mette Elisabeth (Dahlgaard) Vestergaard. She immigrated to Canada at the age of 26 and married her late husband, Jens with whom she worked in mixed farming for 56 years. She was an adherent of Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, life member of the Abercrombie WINS and a member of the NDP. She was a charter member of Pictou County 4-H clubs and a 4-H leader for many years in Abercrombie. She enjoyed flower gardening. Surviving are daughters, Ruth Johannesen, Cornwall, Ont.; Edith "Edie" (Bill) Chisholm, Bedford; Elizabeth "Lil" Wilson, Toronto, Ont.; Beryl "Buppy" (Alan) Watling, Coe Hill, Ont.; Mary Ann (Richard) Leblond, Wakefield, Que.; sons, Anders "Andy" (Carol), Antigonish; Peter (Jean), Abercrombie, formerly of Whittby, Ont.; Eric (Lois), Ingleside, Ont.; Carl (Marion), Abercrombie; brothers, Tage and Ove, Denmark; 24 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Jens; sister, Karen; brothers, Poul and Jakob. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in P & K MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Rev. Flemming Holm officiating. Burial will be in Abercrombie Cemetery. Donations may be made in her memory to the VON or the Arthritis Society.
