Born at Kirkhouse Farm, Dolphinton, South Lanarkshire; he was a native of the parish of Dolphinton.

He was a Chartered Accountant in Edinburgh, and was the Principal of the firm Richard Brown & Co., C.A., 23 St. Andrew Square, Edinburgh. For many years he held the office of secretary to the Society of Accountants in Edinburgh and was president of the society at the time of his death. Among the many professional appointments he held were those of auditor to the Church of Scotland and the British Linen Bank.

He died suddenly at his home at 22 Chester Street, Edinburgh. He was aged 61 years and unmarried. His funeral was held Tuesday, 28 May 1918. (bio: A. Beattie)
