Edward C. Bailey Sr.
Vietnam vet was active in Hermitage Fire Dept.

Edward C. Bailey Sr. passed away at 2:39 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, in his Hermitage home following an extended illness. He was 71.

Mr. Bailey was born Dec. 5, 1941, in Sharon to Nelson Bailey and Nina Charles Bailey.

He graduated from Hickory High School, Hermitage, in 1960 and attended New Castle Business College.

In 1963 Mr. Bailey joined the United States Air Force and served during both the Cuban missile crisis and the Vietnam War.

On Sept. 17, 1966, he married the former Sandra Detelich, who survives at home.

In 1990 he retired with the rank of master sergeant from the Air Force Reserves at Wright Patterson Air Force Base as the base deputy fire chief. Mr. Bailey was also retired from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

He was very active in the Hermitage Fire Department, beginning in 1960 when he completed the curriculum and eventually served as fire police captain.

Mr. Bailey was also a member of the Hermitage Auxiliary Police, Hermitage Special Fire Police and West Middlesex and Transfer volunteer fire departments. He was past president of the Mercer County Fire Police Association and Free and Accepted Masons Kedron Lodge, West Middlesex.

Mr. Bailey also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and using his ham radio.

Besides his wife, Mr. Bailey is survived by: a son Edward Bailey Jr. and his wife Cindy, Volan; two daughters; Elaine Faylo and her husband James, Hermitage; and Rebecca Bale and her husband Dennis, Pulaski; a brother; Harold Bailey, Brookfield; two sisters, Nancy Taylor and her husband David, Sharon; and Janice Hart and her husband Robert, Fayetteville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.
