Elmo was born on April 10, 1935, in Coble, Tennessee. He was the third of five children born to Oscar Seymour Armstrong & Mattie Ruth Chessor. Elmo married Carolyn Rowland and had one child, Lynn. He passed away at the age of 60.

Except for a brief time when his family lived in Ecourse, Michigan, Elmo grew up in Hickman County, Tennessee. He attended Hickman County High School in Centerville, graduating third in his class in 1953. He worked for Genesco for approximately 40 years, first in Centerville and later in Waynesboro, Tennessee.

Elmo was a huge sports fan. He played basketball while in school and coached girls' Junior Pro basketball in the late 1970s. Elmo was also a country music fan, spending many nights at the Grand Ole Opry in his younger years. He loved Bill Monroe's music and would sing "Christmas Time's A'Coming" year round!

My Dad was family-oriented and loved children. Even though he was a shy person, he was very personable and everyone seemed to love him, especially his coworkers at Genesco. This was a great benefit to me growing up - people loved on me or were nice to me simply because I was his daughter!
