WINDSOR - Nelson T. Childress, 84, of Windsor died 3:07 p.m. Monday (June 10, 2002) in St. John's Hospital, Springfield.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, with the Revs. Lynette DeAtley and Cathy Minor officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Gallagher Chapel Cemetery near Fancher.

Memorials: Clarksburg United Methodist Church.

Mr. Childress was born June 30, 1917, in Decatur, the son of Jesse and Veda Wright Childress. He worked 23 years for Blaw-Knox Construction Equipment Co., Mattoon. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy, and was a member of Clarksburg United Methodist Church. He was an avid gardener and fisherman. He married Alvena Hopkins on June 17, 1939, in St. Bernice, Ind.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Carl Childress of Hannibal, Mo.; Roy Childress and wife Helen of Shelbyville; daughters, Nancy Jones and husband Don of Shelbyville; Phyllis Thomas and husband Oscar of Stewardson; sisters, Lenore Parkerson of Brownstown; Mary Watson of Cisne; Lydia Beck of Beecher City; Dorthea Rhodes of Vandalia; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Ralph, Don, Eugene and Wayne; and sister, Sleata Dively.
