Born in Landau, Russian Empire (now Широколанівка [Shyrokolanivka], Ukraine, 47°10′03″ N 31°26′01″ E). Son of Paul Hirsch (1848-?) and Francisca Nuss (1847-?).

Obituary:
New England, N.D. - Requiem mass for Joseph Hirsch, 90, former New England resident who died Sunday (Mar. 5) in a Dickinson, N.D., nursing home, will be sung at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Church. The Rev. Stephen R. Zastoupil will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Michel-Olsen Funeral Home. Mr. Hirsch was born May 1, 1877, in Landau, Russia, and came to Mandan, N.D., in 1902. He returned to Russia in 1907, and settled at Lemmon, S.D., a year later. He farmed at Scheffield Community in North Dakota in 1912 and to New England in 1949. Mr. Hirsch lived at the Dickinson nursing home since July 29, 1957. He married Eugenia Keller in Russia in 1908. She died Nov. 16, 1918. He married Maria Kern at Scheffield, N.D., Jan. 11, 1919. She died July 29, 1958. Mr. Hirsch was a member of St. Mary's Church and St. Pius Verein. Survivors include five sons, Joseph, Billings; Peter and Adam, both of Milwaukee, Wis.; Jack, Silverton, Ore., and Rudolph, Reeder, N.D.; one daughter, Mrs. Walter Ebner, Marinette, Wis.; a step-son, Thomas Ill, Milwaukee, Wis.; four step-daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Meyer, Mrs. Tillie McMurray and Mrs. Kathryn Peck, all of Carmel, Calif., and Mrs. Casper Braun, Dickinson, N.D.; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
