He began his career in the theatre, then appeared in short reel films during the silent era and made his big screen debut in "24 Hours" (1931). Some of his memorable credits include roles in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942), "Kings Row" (1942), "Guadalcanal Diary" (1943), "The Virginian" (1946), "The Jackie Robinson Story" (1950) and "Trapeze" (1956). He died in Alton, Illinois, at age 75.
