Her son Charles Dreier-Thane was born to Rosemary almost three months after the death in action of her first husband, Heinrich Wilhelm Dreier. Heinrich perished in the last months of WWII, and never knew his son Charles (christened Karl-Heinz). Due to Rosemary's weak health at the end of the war, Charles was cared for by his aunt Frieda, Rosemary's sister, and by Oma Anna, mother to the two sisters.

In 1948, Frieda followed her American service husband Joseph Thane to America. In 1952, Rosemary and her second husband, Otto, followed to North America but were unable to gain permission to reside in the USA. After spending years with both families, Charles chose to stay with his aunt and her husband in Minnesota.

Following the death of her father in Germany in 1960, her mother came to live with the Braunig's in Winnipeg. She was a part of their lives for her remaining years, as Rosemary and her family cared for her.
