Born Youssef Mustacchi, he was a multi-instrumentalist, composer and polyglot singer, who recorded in French, Greek, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, German, Yiddish, Hebrew, English and Portuguese. He wrote songs for Edith Piaf, Yves Montand, Serge Reggiani and Barbara. Throughout his career, from 1961 to 2008, he recorded more than 30 albums. In 1968 he wrote and recorded "Le métèque" ("The Stranger"), his biggest hit and one of the great success of the French music of those times, which was sung and recorded by dozens singers around the world. His other big hits were: "Sarah", "Milord", "Il est trop tard", "Ma Solitude", "Ma Liberté" and "La Dame Brune".
