A Portage district history book explains how Jessie encountered her husband. While a teacher, she met Robert McDermott, “a prominent citizen of the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie,” and “a gentleman who served as reeve (1923-1925), the chief magistrate for the district.” Robert McDermott had panned for gold in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. Two years later he returned with enough gold for an engagement ring and he and Jessie were married. The McDermotts settled in the community of Edwin and their homestead was called Bellemeade in honour of Jessie McDermott’s middle name, Isabel or Belle.
