The Rev. Abshire was called to the ministry by the Boones Mill Church of the Brethren in 1951 and ordained in the 1954. He served as pastor for several churches in the Virlina District, and was recognized by the Virlina District for 50 years of service in the set-apart ministry in 2002. His life was spent caring for God's people as a pastor in rural congregations while maintaining a full-time position with the N&W Railroad. His ministry enabled congregations to renovate and build new buildings, grow in numbers and expand the capacity of their pastoral programs. He retired from the N&W with 38 years of service. While with the railroad, he was active with his local union and elected as president, secretary and treasurer. He was currently a member of the Williamson Road Church of the Brethren, where until his illness, he was active in various roles in the life of the church. Before his illness, the Rev. Abshire was also an active member of the Williamson Road Lions Club.
