R.F. Patman enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 6 May 1862 in Rome, Georgia. He was mustered as a Private in Company F, Infantry Battalion of Smiths Legion, Georgia Volunteers. This unit was increased to regiment March 1863 and designated as Fain's Regiment Georgia Infantry which subsequently became the 65th Georgia Infantry. R.F. was assigned to Company D, 65th Georgia Infantry during March 1863. Surrendered by Gen. Joseph E. Johnston at Greensboro, North Carolina on 26 April 1865. His ending rank was 1st Sergeant when he was paroled 1 May 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina.

Patman is listed both as a Gordon County Confederate Pensioner (p.164) and as the recipient of a Cross of Honor from the UDC (p.240) in Pitts' "History of Gordon County Georgia."
