The correct spelling of his last name is Whitmore.

During the Civil War, some areas of north Georgia were strongly pro-Union. Some joined Union military units in nearby states. In the summer of 1864, the Union army begin to recruit north Georgians into military units which eventually became known as the 1st Georgia Infantry.

In October of that year, a large number of these men were captured. It was discovered that a dozen of these men had deserted from the Confederate army. The deserters were taken to Gainesville, Georgia and executed on November 7, 1864.

After the War ended, their bodies were transferred to the National Cemetery at Marietta, Georgia in July of 1867.
