The son of Moses & Nancy Ann (Hudson) Greenland, he married Sabina Witter some time during 1856 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, fathering Laura Anna (b. 05/07/56 - married Samuel Breckenridge Piper), Ruth Emma (b. 11/21/57 - married George Cook), Juniata Kate (b. 1860 - married Walter Stouffer), Malinda Josephina (b. 04/15/62 - married John Carson Stevick), Frances Elizabeth (b. 05/17/64), William Scott (b. 01/31/67), Margaret Alice (b. 1870), Lemuel Swaney (b. 08/13/73), and Maud Maria (b. 1875). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Springfield Township, Huntingdon County, but is in that census as "Abram," and all three children then living are listed with either partial or incorrect names, including daughter Juniata who is listed as son Jonathan.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-two in Harrisburg August 29, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 2 as a private with Co. K, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.
