Jacob Mansfield's son killed at Rantoul by freight train.] Rantoul - A
horrible accident occurred Saturday evening which caused the instant death of a
son of Mr. Jacob Mansfield, aged ten and a half years. A freight train on the
Illinois Central R. R. was going north and the boy attempted to pass over or
crawl under the train. It was dark and no one saw the accident or heard any cry.
A few minutes after the train passed one of the train men discovered the body of
the boy a few rods south of the depot the head being entirely dissevered and one
arm crushed. A coroner's jury was impaneled and found that facts as above
stated. No blame attaches to the company or to any one else. The funeral
services were held at the Congregational church, Sunday at 2 p.m. Rev. J. L.
Foada preached an impressive sermon. The church was crowded and probably as many
as fifty persons were outside. Much sympathy is felt for the family in the loss
of their only son.
