Daughter of Thomas Crompton and Martha Mottershead (Mottram)

Married James Barlow, 13 Feb 1831, St. Mary, Eccles, Lancashire, England. He died 22 Jul 1849, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England.

Children - Nancy Barlow, Mary Ann Barlow, Martha Barlow, John Barlow, Emma Jane Barlow, Alice Barlow, Joseph Smith Barlow

History. Ann, 52, and her three youngest children: John Barlow, age 17, Jane Barlow, age 15, and Joseph Smith Barlow, age 7, came to Utah with the Martin handcart company in 1856. On the way across the plains, the company was at one time forced to break camp and flee to escape a snow slide. After the snow slide was over they returned to see if by chance anyone in the company had been left behind, although no one seemed to be missing. During the search, someone discovered what appeared to be some specks of black soot on the snow. A little scraping in the snow revealed that instead of soot it was the fringe of a black shawl. It proved upon further digging to be the fringe of a shawl that Ann Crompton (Barlow) was wearing. She had been buried in the snow slide but for the fringe of her shawl would have lost her life.
