The son of Henry Felix & Catherine (Fehler) Kreiser, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his parents in Union Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. At adulthood, he stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg January 14, 1864, overstating his age by three years, as a private with Co. B, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa). On June 17, 1865, he transferred to Co. B, 1st Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, as part of a war-end consolidation, and honorably discharged with his company July 13, 1865.

He married Catherine Louisa Conrad in 1867 and fathered Elizabeth (b. @1867) and from 1870 resided in Dauphin County. Catherine died in 1900, and he married Caroline Imboden Strickler December 14, 1902. Death came from a bizarre accident. While mowing a field with a mule-drawn mower, the animal stopped and refused to continue. Kreiser jumped on its back to urge it forward, but the mule bolted, throwing Kreiser backwards onto the ground and pulling the 1,300 lb. mower over his body, crushing him.
