John was the second of nine known children born to James Abbott and his second wife, Susannah "Susan" Bradds. Even though he was born in Botetourt County, VA, John lived most of his life in Craig County, VA.
Despite his father's support for the Union during the Civil War, John fought for the Confederacy. He was only 18 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company B, 28th Virginia Infantry Regiment on 12 March 1862. He was wounded in a June 1862 battle at Gaines Mill, but was still on the muster rolls in December 1864. During the war, John somehow managed to survive battle wounds, measles, dysentery, and intestinal fever (according to muster rolls for his unit and the hospital he recovered in). His service record shows that he was designated with "Distinguished Service".
John married Elzira Clementine Ruble on 10 Jan 1866 in Craig County, VA, and they were blessed with at least twelve children (three are known to have died in infancy). Many of the Abbott families living in current-day Craig County descend from John and Elzira.
