Dorothy Vollmer Wilton

Dorothy Wilton, 83, devoted and loving wife of Joseph W. Wilton of Wallingford, Passed peacefully into the hands of God on Sunday, November 26, 2006 at MidState Medical Center in Meriden, surrounded by her loving family

She was born in New York City, December 4, 1922, a daughter of the late Fred and May Vollmer. Growing up in New York during exciting times, she soon demonstrated a lifelong love of music and dance, a passion and legacy that she passed on to her children and grandchildren. When she met Joseph for the first time at her 15th birthday party, it was the start of a committed life together rarely seen today. Upon graduation from high school, she went to work at E.R. Squibb and Sons in New York. As members of what has come to be called "The Greatest Generation", Dotty and Joe were married in 1942 shortly before Joe went off to Europe and Africa during World War II, while Dotty continued working at Squibb supplying the troops with medicine. After the war, they settled in Cambridge, MA, where Joe pursued his degree at M.I.T. As the 1950's dawned, they moved to Wallingford, where Dotty would spend the rest of her life. She was employed for many years at American Cyanamid in the accounts payable department until her retirement. Beyond the office, she was active in the Wallingford League of Women Voters, the Yalesville Little League Auxiliary, the Ridgeland Association, as well as being a founding member of the Farms Country Club and Our Lady of Fatima Church. But above all, as the mother of her six children, Dorothy achieved her greatest accomplishment in life as the most selfless, loving, supportive and committed mother that any child could ever have. Through her compassion, capability, strength and dedication, she taught us all the true meaning of unconditional love. Her spirit will forever be a beacon of courage, love, commitment and faith to those of us blessed to call her ours.

In addition to her loving husband of almost 65 years, Joseph, she is survived by four sons, Timothy Wilton, Robert Wilton, Daniel Wilton, and Jonathan Wilton; her daughter Wendy W. Bustamante; her nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren; she is also survived by several nieces, nephews and their children, as well as a lifelong friend and sister-in-law, Adelaide "Billie" Wilton. She was predeceased by her son, Joseph M. Wilton; her sister, Anna; and her brother, John.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. from The Yalesville Funeral Home when the funeral cortege will proceed to Our Lady of Fatima Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meriden.
